Today is the once-in-four-year day, and fittingly, i met up with 2 friends (three of us anime fans having completed that best-rpg-out-there, persona 3) at sakae sushi. They asked me if i could eat raw food (i seldom do, btw), but i was in a heck-care mood and tried some. subsequently, a couple of hours later, i had an upset stomach, and all of us had to stop our conversation and return home abruptly due to me. But it was really fun, talking about anime, persona 3 and reminiscing about school days. Hmm, just like the movie leap years (no i didn't watch it, but the sheer number of trailers would have caught anyones' attention), i wanna meet them every leap year(of course, we'll meet up every now and then too)!

thanks to a friend, who asked me to help her check if there were proper labtop powerpoints in the library, i picked up the latest book by my fav author, the darkest evening of the year!

all tutorials, revision, anime out of the way; its reading time

as i mentioned earlier, this movie was an extreme disappointment. Having watched the original movies and the anime series [note: the movie endings were different from the manga/anime, and actually only covered the 1st half of the anime/manga], i had really high expectations for this show. Had this been a typical crime-solving movie, it would have been ok. but this film was marketed as a dethnote film, with the trailer mentioning the deathnote, and the poster including the picture of the shinigami ryuk (ok, it was mentioned it was a deathnote spin-off).
But no no no, apart from scant references to the deathnote and some footage from the original deathnote films, this movie has nothing to do with deathnote at all. Hardly a battle of wits this time, much of the movie time was devoted to L and his team travelling around, and peppered with little jokes that shows L doing cute stuff. As my friend put it, this movie was more of a fan service for female fans who liked the suave L. So yeah, the rating is
3.5/5 stars, if it was a normal crime-solving film
0.5/5 stars, since it was marketed as a deathnote film

misadventure 1: test. one of the questions, i previously saw a new formula relating to that question in a tutorial, and my friend told me to include that formula in the helpsheet, in case a similar question shows up. well, it did, but i did NOT have the formula on the helpsheet; i forgot to do that. another question, i did have the formula needed on the helpsheet this time, but due to being panicky, i couldn't find the formula within the test hour; only found it after the test. double combo, grrr!
misadventure 2: helped some friends to buy 6 tix for a movie the next day. only after leaving the box office for 5 minutes, when upon double-checking, i realized that the tix were for today, not the next day! i ran back to the box office, whereupon consultation with the manager (by the ticketing staff), i managed to get the tix swapped to the correct day. then another blow came when the venue was wrong this time. by that point, i decided to tell my friends the venue will be swapped, to avoid a potential uproar with the ticketing staff.
misadventure 3: watching L: change the world, which was an absolutely dismal movie. more on that tomorrow.

Yes!!! Singapore will host the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, beating Moscow with 53 to 44 votes. The Olympic Village will be based on in NUS, but I would have graduated by then, honours or not. Now along with the integrated resorts, Singapore Flyer and F1, things are really heating up in little Singapore!

Toshiba has announced it will cease production of hd-dvds, leaving Sony's blu ray discs as the next generation disc storage system. the fallout begun when the playstation 3 decided to go blu-ray(alright, since playstation is under Sony too, theres no reason it won't utilize blu ray), . the penultimate hit came when entertainment giants Warner Bros placed its stake exclusively on blu-ray. the sucker punch came when Wal-Mart decided to go blu-ray also. so, yea, now that blu-ray has won... till the next battle begins.

i'd say its a hat-trick of kinda disappointing novel-to-movie adaptations following jumper. though i didn't read the books of golden compass, i am legend and jumper, all seemed to fall short. the idea behind jumper was cool, the ability to teleport anytime anyplace(with the exception being places new to the jumper). The action sequences and teleporting were cool, but the plot seemed kinda weak; a supposed war between jumpers and paladins involved mainly only two jumpers and one paladin. and nobody got killed, so its just like a part 1 of who-knows-how-many series. and the experience was ruined further by the fact that the screen was kinda fading at times (not the movies' fault; the cinemas' fault), first the subtitles, then slowly spreading to the images. some people started to get distracted, looking around for help from staff. the problem was eventually overcome, but well.. it kinda dampened the experience.

yes, today's the day, where i saw gals of all ages, from all walks of life, having a single stalk of rose, a bouquet of flowers, 99 roses(ok not that many), some letting it peek out of their backpack, labtop bag or sling bag, some holding it in a nicey-nice paper bag, others holding in right in front of them, like some priced trophy. yes its worthy to celebrate valentine's day, but if couples were nice to each other throughout the year, each day would be happy and valentine-ny.
and i a new poem finally hit me: as i stepped onto the home-bound train, i just couldn't stop typing out the new poem in the handphone:
couples out there
doesn't matter if she's tanned or fair
doesn't matter if he's short or tall
since you heeded each others' call
hold each other deeply
and cherish each other lovingly
mix it up with utmost care and concern
and the strength of love will be easy to discern
listen to each others' heart
hear the inner voice playing the part
of forging an unbreakable bond
that lasts every dusk and dawn
and of course singles fret not
busk in the loving atmosphere and give love your support
it'll too be your day
come what mayLabels: my poems

The Singapore Flyer has opened its capsules for organisations, for one week only. The official opening for the public is on March 1st, but it's fully booked for the 1st 3 months. duh! the standard price for an adult ticket is $29.40, for a 30-min ride.

well, thats it of the CNY up-sized holiday stretch... time really flies at breakneck speed. at least there's still the one week vacation break to look forward to...

after the double monster combo a few weeks back, today was the kung fu dunk - CJ7 combo. no '2 movies for the price of one' trick this time, though both were 7 dollars. the first was an online booking; the safra card and HSBC credit card stacked on for a 2 bucks discount. the second movie was watched at bedok princess, a modest cinema charging $7 for weekend shows (yes, meaning prices drop to a record $5 for weekday shows).
speaking of which, both were equally ok, though not exceptional: kung fu dunk, staring jay chou and his one-expression-throughout-the-show, was full of over-the-top CG action sequences and wisecracks, though the story seemed reminiscent of shaolin soccer. CJ7, was kinda mediocre compared to the previous 2 Stephen Chow giants, shaolin soccer and kung fu hustle. a show with a few touching scenes, and filled with exaggerating jokes.

visited grandma's house, and there was a 7-year old turtle in the house. problem is, i didn't know of this turtle though i've been here every CNY!
mind you, this guy's a giant:

upon seeing strangers, it proceeded towards...

the table...

and proceeded to take cover...

and still peeked out form under the table... so cute!

yes, i've put my new knowledge of malay language to its first use: 'jangan berdini dekat pintu', on the mrt doors, which translate to don't stand near door. wooz!
and btw, in all 3 of my malay (or rather, bahasa indonesia classes), the gals outnumber guys by a ratio of about 2 to 1. yippie!

jay chou and stephen chow were in town today to publicise their respective new movies, kung fu dunk and CJ7, both opening during chinese new year. wonder how will jack neo's new gangster movie stack up to these 2 juggernauts.

couldn't resist taking these photos of the cutie-cutie animals at the pet shop:

my house was once home to a guinea pig, hamsters and rabbit too, but sadly all of them passed away as time went by. it was nice having them around, esp. the guinea pig, with its uieee-uieee sounds it makes. aww, maximum cuteness!!!
